Description by the author

Medieval Volterra is more than worth a visit. In addition to the many churches , there is the ancient Roman theater.

Free parking on Via Fonda, at the Coop or further up in Via Fonda at/beyond the sports complex.

Via a tough climb along the former thermal baths we arrive at the Church di San Lino with a beautifully painted ceiling. A little further on we get a nice view of the Roman amphitheater from the first century BC.

We continue to the 'Porta Fiorentina' and through the public urban park 'Il Bastione'. A few churches further - we are in Tuscany! - we pass the 'Fortezza Medicea' settlement to walk through the 'Enrico Fiumi' archaeological park . When you leave the park, a café/terrace invites you to admire the panorama of the city.

On the Piazza dei Priori we find the cathedral with its chapel worth seeing, the octagonal baptistery and a chapel that has been converted into a museum of stretcher bearers.

Continue to the porta All Arco and return to the car park.

After this city walk it is interesting to also take a look at the 'balze' , a few kilometers north of Volterra.

Be sure to check out the sights on site! They explain what to see.

This city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours that depart from Villa Roberto and are described in

'Explore Tuscany from Villa Roberto: Pisa / Lucca / Siena / San Gimignano / Volterra / Pistoia':
