Description par l'auteur

With this walk we visit the historic center of Sciacca in Sicily. The most important sights are:

- Monte Kronio, Castello Incantato and a city visit to Sciacca

Free parking on Via Eleonora d'aragona.

We start with a visit to the harbor and walk to the Madonna del Porto on the palisade. We get a good view of the location of the city on the side of a hill, which suggests that the rest of the walk will involve climbing and descending stairs ...

We climb along the artistic staircase that shows why Sciacca is known for its ceramics. Passing churches and palaces we arrive at the old Jesuit school, called the most impressive building in the city . This brings us to the Piazza Angelo Scandaliato for the first time, which, like a large terrace , offers a panoramic view of the sea and the harbor below.

We walk east to the Basilica Maria SS del Soccorso whose mighty east-facing apse and mighty Gothic arches from the fifteenth century have been preserved from the original structure. A little further away is the Palazzo Taglivia S. Giacomo, one of the most prestigious city palaces in Sciacca.

The municipal park villa Ignazio Scaturro represents an important part of the historical and botanical heritage. A revaluation is underway... We continue walking to the Chiesa Sant'Agostino and retrace our steps.

The Sicilians come to Sciacca twice a year for the Lourdes Cave . In summer, Holy Mass and Vespers are held in the Grotto.

We pass the Castello Luna that rises high on the rock in the eastern part of the city. Here we also see part of the old city walls and walk to the Porta San Calogero.

A little further on, the Chiesa Santa Maria dell'Itria, together with the adjacent monastery, better known as the Badia Grande , form the city's most important monumental complex . A little further on, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcang is one of the most beautiful in Sciacca due to its vastness.

We continue walking to the Torre Campanaria , a privileged viewpoint from which you can enjoy a 360 degree panorama of the entire city .

It is now a short walk to the west of the city, to the Porta Palermo. This city gate still has the old wooden doors , reinforced with iron bands. We pass the Palazzo Steripinto and past some monasteries, of which the Ex convento del Carmine is currently (2023) used as a prison .

This brings us to the third and last surviving city gate, the Porta San Salvatore, richly decorated with Spanish-Moorish taste. A little further away is the Chiesa del Carmine with its impressive malicate dome and rose window.

We return to Piazza Angelo Scandaliato with the Chiesa di San Domenico. We take the wide stairs on the left back to the parking lot.

Be sure to consult the information about the sights once you are there . They explain what you will see!

This city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours that depart from Balestrate and Sambucco di Sicilia and are described in
