Gta - Great Walk of the Alps: Southern Stretch of Piedmont

The GTA enters the southern part of the Piedmont Region between the Val Pellice and the Valle Po (Stage 50) in correspondence with the Monviso massif. It goes around the mountain symbol of Piedmont with various options for variants and then descends into the Varaita Valley. From this point on, one can choose whether to follow the main route that remains in the midlands of the Occitan valleys or a more challenging variant that runs at higher altitudes between Val Varaita, Maira, and Stura. Upon reaching the Maritime Alps, the main route stays relatively elevated and a possible lower variant is proposed to explore the Val Vermenagna. The final stretch allows for going around the Marguareis, the highest peak of the Ligurian Alps, crossing the unique karst environments of the area and finally descending into the Tanaro Valley until Ormea, where the itinerary ends.
