Occitan Paths

The Occitan Paths are the most frequented hiking circuit in the Maira Valley. Designed in 15 stages, it stretches from the plains of Villar San Costanzo to the pastures of Elva, Prazzo, and Acceglio; returning from the opposite side through Chialvetta, La Gardetta, Marmora, Macra, and Celle Macra. There are options for shorter loops along the route. Along the way, there are shelters, stopping places, and inns offering typical Occitan dishes. The trail is marked with wooden signs and yellow notches. The hiking circuit of the Occitan Paths is included in the category Trails of the census initiated by FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) to promote particularly beloved places that one would like to see preserved for future generations. The itinerary of the Occitan Paths retraces the ancient mule tracks of the Maira Valley that, in the past, connected the villages situated on the steep slopes of the mountains. Along the route, there are countless artistic and architectural landmarks of Romanesque and Gothic styles dating back to the period of the Marquisate of Saluzzo from the 12th century, enriched by the traditional Occitan culture present in three countries (Italy, France, Spain).
