Brandenbourg Castle

The Brandenburg Castle, located in the village of the same name between Diekirch and Vianden, was first mentioned in documents in 1244, with Gottfried von Brandenburg as a knight. It is likely that a structure existed here as early as the 10th century.

By the end of the 13th century, it came into the hands of Dietrich von Neuerburg (House of Vianden) and the building was expanded with a chapel. Further expansion followed around 1400; a 2-story cellar, the northern outer bailey with curtain wall and 3 southern towers. With the advent of firearms, the castle was reinforced on the northern side around 1500 with an artillery tower, and the entrance was also fortified. During this period, a prison with at least 4 towers was built.
In 1410, the castle seems to have become the property of (another) Gottfried von Brandenburg. In 1413 it was besieged by the Duke of Luxembourg Anton of Burgundy in his struggle to subdue the Luxembourg nobility. Gottfried capitulated, as did the lords of Esch sur Sûre and Clerveaux. After the death of Gottfried von Brandenburg in 1451, his son-in-law Simon de Fénestrange became lord of Brandenburg. Other names mentioned in connection with the castle include: André de Harancourt (early 15th century), Jean de Salm (early 16th century), Sebastian Naur von Kitzingen and Charles de Stassin (1628), Jean Mathieu de Blochausen and Baroness Ch. Van Delft (1935).

The castle is open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM.
