Fond-de-Gras

The Land of Red Earth, as the southwest of the Grand Duchy is called, is the old industrial center for iron and steel production. Here, near the borders with Belgium and France, lies the Parc Industriel et Ferroviaire du Fond-de-Gras, an industrial and railway park with a collection of industrial heritage that gives a glimpse into the past. Fond-de-Gras is built around an old railway depot. Steam and diesel trains make a 20-minute ride from here to Pétange. There, the Musée de Plein Air about industrial life, with miners' cottages, workshops, and tools, is located. A narrow-gauge train, minièresbunn, travels underground through a disused iron mine to Lasauvage, a preserved iron foundry and mining village. A nature reserve is also located here in a former open-pit mine.
