Old bridge over the Sauer

The old bridge over the Sauer, located between Echternach and Echternacherbrück, was a Roman construction until the 19th century. Presumably, already in the first period of Romanization there was the actual construction of a road bridge over the Sauer; however, this has not been proven. In the 16th and 17th centuries, several remains of Roman funerary monuments were discovered on the pillars, probably built later and restored later in 1748 and 1909. A depiction of the bridge from the 17th century shows that there must have been six arches at one time, but the second of which was damaged and the fifth collapsed, as it actually was at the time of the illustration. In addition, the sixth arch was probably connected to the left bank of the river by a drawbridge. An engraving from 1867 shows the bridge still with six arches. At the beginning of 1870, in conjunction with the construction of Prince Heinrich's railway, the last arch on the Echternach side was filled.
