Vianden

The tourist center of Vianden is intersected by the Our. In the center, along the banks of the Our, you may see the chairlift that departs from Rue du Sanatorium soaring high above the town to the Belvédère located at an altitude of 440 meters. If you have the opportunity, you should definitely take advantage of it; when the lift hovers above the Our, you have a dizzying view of Vianden and the mighty castle.
The castle of Vianden (Veianen in Luxembourgish) is one of the largest medieval fortresses in the country. The oldest part dates back to the 9th century and was owned by the Dutch House of Orange for centuries until 1820. Since 1978, the Luxembourg state has been the owner, and the fortress has been restored to its original state. Various parts, including the Knight's Hall, the Armory, the Byzantine Hall, and the Counts' Hall, are open for viewing. Also pay attention to the watchtower at the foot of the hill, which is named Hockelsturm.
Another attraction is the hydroelectric power station with its pumping station. The following ingenious system is used for electricity generation: the Lohmühle dam has been built on the Our. Above the dam, there are two large storage basins on the St. Nicholas mountain. The height difference of nearly 300 meters between the basins and the reservoir is used to generate electricity. Nine enormous turbines are set up in an underground power station to pump water from the reservoir to the storage basins at night when electricity consumption is lower. During the day, the water then flows down again through the turbines. Vianden has a splendid center; when you walk through the narrow streets, it feels as if you are taking a journey through time. For example, there is the Gothic church from the 12th century with the adjacent monastery, the Town Hall, and the house of the famous French writer Victor Hugo by the bridge over the Our. The many beautiful 16th and 17th-century mansions along the Grand-Rue have also preserved their medieval charm.
