Description by the author

The Big Jugla starts in Malpils region and it flows through Ropaži and Garkalne regions, where it by conflowing with the Small Jugla forms the Jugla River. The beginning of the river is Sidgunda where it is formed in confluence of the Mergupe and the Suda. The decline of the river is 71 m, the slope per 1 km is 1.1 m. Above Ropaži the river is slow, 5 - 15m wide, boatable also in low level.
Dam of Ropaži HPP is around 1.5m high concrete wall across the entire river and can be boatable only at high water level, because all the water is directed to HPP. From the dam to HPP it is possible to boat through the channel by getting out near the bridge of the highway. After the dam the river decline remains high up to the bridge and also around 300m after it. In good level here are quite good waves and standing waves. Around 300 m after the highway bridge the decline decreases to some 1.5m/km.
Shortly above Bajāri there begin rapids. In some places there are formed quite good waves what can be used for surfing. Rapids are local - namely - none of them is longer than 50m, the decline of the river - around 3.5m/km. This stage of rapids continues until Zaķumuiža, but it is more useful to terminate the boating just below the bridge, which is around 1km above the centre of Zaķumuiža because the river banks are overgrown and getting out is quite difficult. Further the river has no rapids, but it can be boated also at low water level.
