Monaco, the small principality on the Mediterranean, is in dire straits in the 19th century. The Grimaldi family earns its income from olive oil and fruit, but that is not much. After a visit to the Hessian spa town of Bad Homburg with its local casino, Princess Caroline sees the light for a new future and a source of income for Monaco. She sees how much money is flowing over those tables in Germany and convinces her family that something must be done with casinos in Monaco. But even more, she manages to persuade a number of investors for her plan. And none other than the later Pope Leo XIII, then still Cardinal Pecci, also puts in his money.
