The building was designed by Diego Rivera, who was inspired by the architecture and materials of pre-Hispanic peoples, to house his enormous collection of Mesoamerican objects, one of the painter's obsessions. The interior has a studio that was never used, as the building was completed by O’Gorman and Diego's daughter, Ruth Rivera Marín, after his death.
Only a small fraction of the 58,000 pieces of the pre-Hispanic art collection is on display. The Zapotec pieces are the most aesthetically pleasing in the collection. Anahuacalli means “The house near the valley” in Nahuatl, as it is located on a hill. From the rooftop terrace, a lovely view of the surroundings can be enjoyed.
