Kees Houtman was murdered in his villa on Johan Braakensiekhof in Osdorp in November 2005. The then 45-year-old real estate dealer and criminal was the third victim of a wave of executions within three days. Two days earlier, former lawyer Evert Hingst was shot dead on the street in Amsterdam-Zuid. A day later, John Mieremet was killed in Thailand.

The Houtman gang was involved in the hashish trade but also committed spectacular robberies. In May 1985, the gang stole three million guilders by driving a front loader into the main post office of Groningen. The highlight of the Houtman gang was supposed to be a robbery at De Nederlandsche Bank on Frederiksplein with the help of a cherry picker. However, the police were able to prevent that robbery after it became clear that the gang was practicing with a cherry picker in a warehouse in the Amsterdam port.

Between 1982 and 1986, the gang committed over forty robberies with a total plunder of twelve million guilders.
