The origin of the name Deurningen is not easy to explain. In old writings it is often not clear whether it is Deurningen or Noord Deurningen, a village between Denekamp and Nordhorn, which is now also located in the municipality of Dinkelland. In the Middle Ages, Deurningen was part of the parish of Oldenzaal, like many other surrounding villages. In 1665 the village separated from this parish together with Rossum, Saasveld and De Lutte. Until 1760 Deurningen was part of the parish of Saasveld, after which it became an independent parish. Saint Plechelmus, a Scottish monk from the 8th century, whose name day is celebrated on 8 May, was chosen as the patron saint of the church. This choice was obvious, given the close historical ties with the parish in Oldenzaal. The first church was completed in 1787. In 1885, the parish boundaries were officially established. Since then, the parish of Deurningen has included the hamlets of Hasselo (where the Hengelo district of Hasseler Es is now located) and Gammelke and a large part of the hamlet of Deurningen.
