Cornelisgracht

The Cornelisgracht runs from the Bovenwijde in Giethoorn via the Canal Beukers-Steenwijk to the Walengracht, which forms the connection between the Giethoornsche Meer and the Beulakerwijde. The canal crosses the Binnenpad and the Dorpsgracht in Giethoorn and runs in a westerly direction through the Polder Giethoorn and the nature reserve De Wieden. Originally, the Cornelisgracht served as a transport route for the transport of peat from the area. A seventeenth-century map by Nicolaas ten Have shows the Cornelisgracht as one of the four water connections to the Giethoornsche Meer. More or less parallel to the Cornelisgracht runs the Suydergraft south of it and the Bouwerssloot and the Tijsjessloot run north of it. The Cornelisgracht - like the three other canals - is named after the then owner. The canals were later connected by the Dwarsgracht. The Cornelisgracht serves recreational pleasure boating and is part of the system of waterways in Northwest Overijssel.
