The Four Winds is the name of the grain and hulling mill on Hoofdstraat in Pieterburen, municipality of Het Hogeland. The mill is a national monument. The first mill on this site was a post mill, which was built around 1628. This mill was replaced in 1825 by an octagonal smock mill. This mill burned down on March 22, 1846, and was replaced later that year by a new octagonal smock mill, the current mill. The mill was in use until the late 1960s and was restored in 1972-'73, since then operated by volunteer millers. Since the early 1990s, the mill has been managed by a volunteer miller, who is also an instructor of the Guild of Volunteer Millers, along with his students. In 2007, the mill became the property of the Stichting Het Groninger Landschap. The sail cross, with a span of 21 meters, is equipped with the Old Dutch sail system with sails. The mill has a pair of grinding stones and two hulling stones. At the end of January 2008, a major restoration began. The entire cap was renewed, and the hulling apparatus was completed and made operational again. On May 22, 2008, the renewed cap was placed and the sail cross was reattached. In the autumn of 2008, the restored mill was completed.
