On the occasion of the 650th anniversary of Hattem in 1949, the Stichting Oud Hattem was established and a historical exhibition was held. In 1971, an ancient history room was set up, which would permanently focus on the history of Hattem and its surroundings as a local museum. The local museum was housed in a 17th-century building on Achterstraat, where it is still located.
