Johan de Witt is the most famous victim of the Groene Zoodje, the execution site of the Court of Holland. Johan de Witt became the scapegoat of the Disaster Year 1672. On August 20, 1672, he was lynched here by the people of The Hague. Their bodies were then hanged from a pole at the nearby Vijverberg. The statue points with its finger to the spot where the murder took place.
