The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is a sand ridge with "peaks" of 50m. In this flat country a true mountain. The highest point is the Amerongse Berg (68m). The ridge was pushed up by an ice deposit during the penultimate ice age. The ice pushed up the gravel and sand deposits of the Rhine and Meuse, which ran more to the north.
The sandy soil is now mostly covered by forests and heathland, because the soil is usually too sparse for other forms of agriculture.
