The Rijnstroompark has a long history. In the 18th century, the Buitenverblijf Rijnstroom was located here. From 1895 it was used by the Martha Foundation, a shelter for young people. The buildings on the premises served as a school, church, and children's home. Those buildings have now been repurposed as a theater/film house, restaurant, apartment complex, and creative center. Since 1982, the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn has been the owner of this park in the Lage Zijde district.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the park was laid out in the style of landscape architect Mien Ruys. Later changes gave the whole a more open character.
Park Rijnstroom is truly a tree park. This is partly due to the collapse of the timber market during World War I. To support the Boskoop growers, the government bought surplus trees and donated them to institutions such as the Martha Foundation.
Many exotic trees have been planted in the park, that is to say, trees that do not naturally occur in the Netherlands. For example, the Atlas cedar and the giant sequoia, which are green all year round. The conical giant sequoias are among the longest-living trees in the world, with specimens that are 3,400 years old. In the fall, the maple leaves turn a beautiful yellow for the restaurant.
