At the end of Donzel, the fracture edge of the Peel Rim Fault is clearly visible in the roadway. Here, just like in ‘t Broek, there is an artwork to draw attention to the phenomenon of wijstgrond. Wijstgrond is a special type of wet, often peaty sandy soil found in North Brabant. These soils are the result of a unique geological phenomenon called 'wijst', which occurs at geological faults, primarily the Peel Rim Fault.
Characteristic properties of wijst grounds are:
-High altitude but still wet: They are located on the higher Peel Horst, yet are remarkably wet.
-Iron-rich: The groundwater that emerges as seepage is rich in iron, resulting in a strong rusty color of water and soil.
-Unique water management: The presence of impermeable layers and iron ore banks blocks the groundwater flow, causing water to rise and come to the surface.
-Rare ecosystem: Wijst grounds provide a unique habitat for specific plant and animal species due to their special conditions.
