The Zwartedijk is one of the oldest dikes around Kampen (fourteenth century), which protected the city against the floodwaters of the Zuiderzee. The many pools along the dike are a clear remnant from the time when the water of the Zuiderzee regularly reached the Zwartendijk. The old trees along the Zwartendijk are elms. The land located to the right of the dike is divided into 'slagen', very long plots, which often extend from the dike to the fringe lake, in front of the tall trees in the distance.
