Neeltje Jans is, as a work island, a part of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier. After the completion of the Delta Works, an information and attraction park was opened on Neeltje Jans. The information center has an exhibition about the Delta Works. In the past, Neeltje Jans was a sandbank at the mouth of the Eastern Scheldt. By raising the sandbank, the work island was created, which was used during the construction of the storm surge barrier. When the work was completed in 1986, Natuurmonumenten and Het Zeeuwse Landschap purchased the island and transformed it into a nature reserve that is part of the National Park Eastern Scheldt. The name Neeltje Jans is derived from a boat that ran aground on the sandbank and that bore the same name.
