An observation post was established on this hill (Amersfoortse Berg) for measuring the speed of sound by the Dutch scientist Gerrit Moll. This took place in the summer of 1823. A cannon was set up, along with a telescope and several measuring instruments to observe the influencing factors (hygrometer, thermometer, barometer, and anemometer). The measurement took place on June 27-28, 1823. The result was the most accurate determination of the speed of sound in the world (332 m/sec).
