The Canal from Ghent to Terneuzen is a canal that connects the Port of Ghent, the 3rd largest port in Belgium, with the Western Scheldt, thereby giving the city a direct connection to the North Sea. The canal flows out into Terneuzen, just a few hundred meters from the Western Scheldt tunnel. In 1823, King William I (when Belgium was still part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands) decided to extend the Sassevaart to Terneuzen.
