The Brink is located between the oldest part of the city of Deventer and the later developed Bergkwartier. After the construction of the new city wall around 1350, a significant part of the shipping moved from the IJsselkade to the harbor at the mouth of the Schipbeek. Thus, the Brink, situated by the riverbank and harbor, became an important center for trade. Merchants from far and wide gathered here to trade at the five large multi-day annual fairs of Deventer. In 1392, the square was paved with cobblestones. That year, the Brink also came under the authority of a so-called Brinkgraaf. Since 1528, the Waag has also stood here at the spot where much of the trade took place. After the rise of the automobile, the square increasingly became used as a parking lot, and in 1993, a design was realized for 3 million euros whereby cars were virtually completely kept off the square.
