The church was built in the neo-Gothic style from 1859 to 1861 and is characteristic of the early period of Pierre Cuypers, during which the architect drew heavily on inspiration from classical French Gothic. Notably, there are flying buttresses on the outside of the choir to support the masonry vaults in that part of the church. In addition, only the side aisles are vaulted in stone; the nave and transept have wooden vaults.
