The Voorstraat used to be known by the name 'Behind the new walls'. The buildings with numbers 80 and 24 are structures of an old cigar factory, many of which existed in Kampen. Number 24 has been converted into small living units. One side of the street is built against the city wall. The city wall (including the invisible parts in houses) now serves as a water barrier. In the alleys, barriers are placed during very high water from the IJssel. The alleys bear the names of the city gates that used to stand there. At the end of the Voorstraat, you will see the oldest of the three preserved city gates of Kampen, the Medieval Koornmarkt Gate (with a view over the IJssel). On the right side of this gate stands one of the oldest and most imposing buildings in the city, the Gothic St. Nicholas or Bovenkerk.
