Oosterling

Café Oosterling in Amsterdam has been owned by the same family for more than 100 years. Marcel and Oscar Oosterling have taken over the business from their father and are now the fourth generation to run this delightful café so splendidly. The business was started in 1877 by their great-grandfather, who also operated a 'First Class Distillery.' Much of the interior still reflects this heritage. Oosterling has been both a café and liquor store since 1820. A unique combination in today's time, greatly appreciated by the many guests (from local neighbors to lines of 'Famous Dutch people').

One of those guests, the late Simon Carmiggelt, wrote about Oosterling: "One of the best cafés, in my opinion, is Oosterling, on the corner of Frederiksplein. In terms of atmosphere and appearance, this café has it all. The ceiling is brown from generations of guys smoking. It has a long bar with rows of bottles and nice barrels. A good crowd too, and that’s important; they can make or break a business."
