When you pass under the bridge, after 400 meters you will arrive at the hamlet of 'Muggenbeet'. Muggenbeet is located between the marshes of the Weerribben and De Wieden and has about 25 permanent residents. The name 'Mosquito bite' has nothing to do with the bite of a mosquito, despite the fact that during the summer these insects can be quite troublesome. The name of this hamlet is a corruption of Mucken Beecke, which is Old Saxon for small brook. In the past, a stream flowed here as a tributary of the Steenwijker Aa. Now Muggenbeet is known for the Hotel Restaurant 'Geertien' where you can still find the friendly atmosphere of times gone by. Muggenbeet used to be a stopping place for peat makers, fishermen, hunters and reed cutters.
