Where boats now sail on the Beulakerwijde, the peat village Beulake used to be located. The village emerged around 1600 when peat workers settled there. The turf makers came from a southern area and settled near the Arembergergracht. The village of Beulake was perpendicular to this waterway. The storm surges of 1775 and 1776 brought an abrupt end to the then still young village. The last remnants of the village disappeared with the storm surge of 1825. A part of the population moved after all the suffering to Schutsloot. The pulpit went to Vollenhove. Legend has it that on the Beulakerwijde, the ringing of the Beulake church bells can still be heard from time to time.
