The Wiersse

Castle De Wiersse is a nationally protected historic estate with 48 complex components in Vorden in the municipality of Bronckhorst, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The estate, which covers 300 hectares, is well-known for its gardens that are open to the public at set times. The oldest known mention dates back to 1288, when Godelinde van Elten leased a piece of land to Hendrik van Borculo. The cellars to the north and possibly the remaining wall of the original house are part of the current house that was rebuilt after 1678. Eventually, the castle came into the hands of the Van Heeckerens in the 18th century until 1893 when the house came into the possession of Victor de Stuers, founder of monument preservation in the Netherlands. He had the house restored between 1907 and 1912. During a second restoration from 1921 to 1925, the filled-in moat was restored; this last work was done under his daughter, jkvr. Alice de Stuers, lady of Wiersse. She married British Major William Edward Gatacre in 1926. From 1982 to 2018, De Wiersse was managed by their son Peter and his wife Laura Dru, who also lived in the house. In 2018, Mary Gatacre and her husband Aart Jonkers took over the management.
