In June 2006, the painting "Shooting Party in Celebration of the Peace of Münster" was damaged by vandalism. This work by Bartholomeus van der Helst was sprayed with a corrosive acid by an elderly German acquaintance of the Rijksmuseum. Hans-Joachim B. from Hamburg, then 69, had already destroyed a large number of paintings in Germany. He had also been imprisoned there until 2005. He was said to suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorders and anxiety disorders. He may have previously become unfit for work due to a brain operation. Despite his photo being at the entrance, he was able to slip in during the busy exhibitions.
The more than 10 square meter large Shooting Party is the most important work of the 17th-century master Bartholomeus van der Helst. It depicts the Amsterdam St. George's Guild celebrating the end of the Eighty Years' War with a peace meal.
