The Bûtenfjild is a nature reserve in the Dutch municipalities of Tietjerksteradeel and Dantumadeel, located between the villages of Giekerk and Veenwouden, north of the village of Hardegarijp. It is 319 hectares in size and consists of a number of sub-areas, all managed by It Fryske Gea.The Bûtenfjild was once a vast peat area. In the 15th century, peat was extracted here by the schiere monks, who came from the Schierstins farmhouse, belonging to the Claerkamp monastery in Rinsumageest. In the end, what remained was a landscape of puddles, pools, reed beds and wet hay meadows. During the crisis years and until after the Second World War, the area was reclaimed by the N.V. Ontginningsmaatschappij De Drie Provinciën. Thanks in part to the former owners, Messrs Ottema and Wiersma, a large part of the nature reserve has been spared and now has the status of a reserve. The d'Amelannen sub-area was acquired through land consolidation. The "Oer de Wiel" sub-area has recently been restored to its original state.
