To the southwest of Zevenaar lies the river area De Gelderse Poort, near the South Gelderland city of Nijmegen. It is located on the banks of the Waal. The nature reserve is named after the place where the Rhine cuts through a moraine formed during the ice age and begins to split. This is effectively the beginning of the Rhine delta. Here, the Rhine and Waal had numerous other courses. The area is characterized by a mixture of wide floodplains, higher sandy mounds, and dikes with many dike breaches that left ponds and whirlpools in the landscape. The drainage basin is blocked by the moraine of Nijmegen and in the north by the moraine of the Veluwe.
