The Doorbraak is a thirteen-kilometer-long stream that will flow from the east side of Almelo to the Midden-Regge upon completion in 2014. The stream prevents the low-lying areas of the urban region of Twente from flooding during heavy rainfall and helps prevent soil drying. Additionally, the stream has an important natural and landscape function because it connects the flora and fauna of Northeast Twente and the Salland Ridge in an ecological zone. The Doorbraak is an example of a planned combination of water, nature, and recreation. A new landscape was created in which nature development, water management, and recreation were integrated. It demonstrates how the age-old struggle against and with water is addressed.
