Blowing at the Dike of Eemland

The dike of Eemland often makes a sharp bend around a small pond. These are waai, wielen, or breach holes that have formed during dike breaches. This dike was supposed to keep the Zuiderzee in check, but sometimes it failed to do so. During such a dike breach, the water from the Zuiderzee poured with great force several meters deep behind the dike, carving out a lot of earth from behind it. When the water receded, a deep pit remained, which filled with water. The dike was usually repaired by placing it again with a curve around the waai, as filling in such a waai or wheel was more work than creating a new dike around it with a curve. The foundation Nature Monuments and the province of Utrecht have declared these waai to be Geological Monuments.
