Westland is most famous for its greenhouse horticulture, and the orange glow that lights up the sky at night, coming from the assimilation lighting in the greenhouses. This region also owes its nickname the Glass City to these glass warehouses.
Horticulture started on a larger scale in Westland in the 19th century. The sand from the old beach ridges was used to improve the soil quality of the peat and clay soils. Around 1850, the first greenhouses were built.
The name "Westland" is derived from the western districts of the Hoogheemraadschap of Delfland. These western districts included not only the current greenhouse horticulture area but also Rijswijk, Voorburg, and Vlaardingerambacht.
