Assassination of William of Orange (July 10, 1584):
In 1580, King Philip II of Spain placed William of Orange, the leader of the Revolt, under a ban, making him an outlaw. The king even put a price on William's head. The fervently Catholic Balthasar Gerards from Franche-Comté saw his opportunity in 1584. As a Huguenot (a French Protestant), he left for Delft, where William of Orange resided in the Prinsenhof. Balthasar hid there on July 10, 1584, with two pistols behind a pillar and waited for the prince. He struck William of Orange with several fatal shots. The staircase in the Prinsenhof, where the shots were fired, still exists today.
