The Du Moulin Line, also known as the Works, is an area of approximately 15 hectares where eight complete outer works of the 18th-century defensive ring of Maastricht have been preserved. The design of the fortifications was by Colonel Engineer Carel Diederick du Moulin (1728-1793), appointed in 1772 as director of the Department of Fortifications of the Upper Maze.
The Du Moulin Line was situated at such a height that no water could be placed in the moats. To protect the fortifications with dry moats against underground attacks, an extensive underground network of listening tunnels was built (commonly referred to as the casemates).
