The cycling path ‘Hollandse Sloot’ forms the border between North Holland and Utrecht. The course of this border has been a point of contention from the time of Floris V until well into the 16th century. Ultimately, the Secret Council established the border line between the Sticht (the old name of the province of Utrecht) and North Holland in 1530, but the surveyor was bribed. As a result, the border was indicated much further west than officially determined. After about 30 years, the matter was rectified by a commission, and since then the Hollandse Sloot has formed the provincial boundary. The many boundary markers still indicate the numerous conflicts in the past. Moreover, all these border issues have led to a very illogical border line, at least from a landscape perspective. For instance, the Utrecht Hill Ridge has been cut in half, with Het Gooi being allocated to North Holland.
