The Waag was built around 1597 under the direction of the Haarlem city architect Lieven de Key. The natural stone façade of the Waag is quite rare in Holland. The transport of the required natural stone was very costly at that time.
For its original function as a Waag, the building is situated in an ideal location along the Spaarne. There, ships could moor to unload their goods. On the ground floor of the Waag was the weighing hall. The scales hung in the arch-shaped doors as well. Depending on the type and weight of the goods brought in, the city council levied taxes. The building fulfilled this function until 1915. Nowadays, you can easily visit the Waag because there is a bar/café located on the ground floor. The upper floors have been rented out for 175 years to one of the oldest artist associations in the country. Monthly exhibitions are organized here. More information about the professional association of visual artists can be found at: www.kzod.nl
Address: Damstraat 29, 30 red (corner Spaarne).
