What is the connection between the first submarine, explosives, Alkmaar, and Norfolk? That link is the Dutchman Cornelis Jacobszoon Drebbel, born in Alkmaar in 1572. He went down in history as the inventor of the submarine. He demonstrated his invention on the River Thames, on the route between Westminster and Greenwich in London to King James I. However, the navy saw no practical applications for his invention... Drebbel was also an explosives expert and offered his services during the siege of La Rochelle in 1627 against the French. As a good Dutch engineer should be, Cornelis Drebbel was also an expert in land reclamation. He contributed to the reclamation of large areas around Norfolk and Suffolk in England.
