In 1420, the river toll of the County of Holland was transferred from Woudrichem to Gorinchem, after which Woudrichem fell into decline and Gorinchem began to thrive. Gorinchem was part of a defensive triangle Woudrichem-Gorinchem-Loevestein. You can see Woudrichem across the Waal. You can cross to the other 2 towns by ferry or foot ferry.
