In the area where Maasbommel is now located, Romans once stayed. One of the most beautiful and rarest finds from Maasbommel is a pure silver Roman trumpet fibula (cloak pin). This type of cloak pin originates from Scotland. An identical specimen is in the museum of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Maasbommel itself was first mentioned as Buomele in 1144. It was granted city rights on August 15, 1312, and became a Hanseatic city. In Maasbommel, coins were minted under Reinald III.
