Hotel Spaander is a hotel founded in 1881 by Leendert Spaander on the Haven in Volendam. The hotel has been visited by several famous individuals, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1885, Emperor Wilhelm II in 1921, Elizabeth Taylor in 1975, and Muhammad Ali in 1976.
Until 1881, the building housed the café of Pieter Steur, with the first permits for Steur dating back to 1854. In 1881, Leendert Spaander began his hotel here, to which he attached his name as the founder. He invited various artists from around the world to come to Volendam through art academies. He provided studio space behind the hotel where they could paint. Several of them, including many American painters, responded to his invitation. The traditional Volendam clothing, the sea, and the landscape served as sources of inspiration for these painters. In gratitude, they gifted Spaander with paintings they created. Some artists came not only for the landscape and the hotel but also for one of Leendert Spaander's seven daughters. Three of them married an artist: Augustin Hanicotte, Georg Hering, and Wilm Wouters. They also contributed to the expansion of Spaander's art collection.
