At the end of the Middle Ages, Zierikzee was an important place in Zeeland and its surroundings. During the Eighty Years' War, Zierikzee was captured by the Watergeuzen in 1572. Thanks to its location on an island, the Spaniards initially failed to retake it. But in November 1575, they landed on Schouwen and Duiveland, and laid siege to Zierikzee. Eventually, the city was captured on June 30, 1576.
Zierikzee is known as the city of monuments. The most famous monument is the Sint-Lievens Monstertoren, commonly referred to as the Dikke Toren. This tower resembles the Sint-Romboutstoren in Mechelen like two drops of water.
