Some claim that the image of the Dragon Fountain on Station Square refers to the "Swamp Dragon". That was the nickname of 's-Hertogenbosch during the Eighty Years' War. The city was given the name because it was considered impregnable due to its location near a swamp.
Another story is that a dragon was chosen because of the legatee's surname. This is also because the dragon holds a shield with the family coat of arms of Bosch van Drakensteijn.
The statue was placed in 1903 and was part of a competition organized by the municipality. Jonkheer Bosch van Drakesteijn, King's Commissioner in North Brabant from 1856 until his death in 1894, had made a bequest to the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch to erect a memorial for his twin daughters, who had died in 1881 at the age of 17. The statue was initially to be placed just in front of the station, but it has been placed a little further east, in the direction of the city center.
