To give the fort a clear line of fire, the district of Ortheneind was demolished, along with the St. Peter and Paul Church. The area that was cleared of buildings covered approximately 4 hectares. The northern access road to the city would henceforth run via the Citadel, leading past the northern and southern gate of the structure.
The firing range that resulted from this came to be called De Plein. This name can still be found today in the Zusters van Carolus Borromeus, or the Zusters van De Plein. The municipality could only rebuild this area after the fortification law in 1874.
