It is still unclear where the famous painter Johannes Vermeer lived in Delft. At some point, he and his wife Catherina moved in with Catherina's mother, who lived in a rather spacious house at Oude Langendijk, almost next to a hidden Jesuit church. Here Vermeer lived for the rest of his life, producing paintings in the front room on the second floor. His wife gave birth here to 14 children: four of whom were buried before being baptized, but were registered as "child of Johan Vermeer"
A scholar once identified the house at Oude Langendijk 25 as the house of Vermeer. The archivist J.M. Montias showed later on that the correct house was long gone and that it was located at the end of the street, on the site of which is now a church.
