Ulvenhoutsebos

Description

Mastbos

'Breda's backyard' sounds irreverent for a stately forest like the Mastbos in the Barony of Breda. With a past of Nassau princes, but also of poachers, gatherers and light-skinners. A forest that only really starts to develop five hundred years after it was planted. Ancient Scots pines full of songbirds. Pedunculate oaks under which it is wonderful to walk. Long avenues, ponds and fens. Het Mastbos: a distinguished lady in her second youth.
Chaamse Bossen

Where there were once sand drifts and wet heathland, between 1900 and 1934 the Chaamsebossen forestry was constructed. The area was drained and wet spots were converted into grassland. This is what gives the area its surprising variety. Now, former agricultural areas are being restored to their original state. This creates fens and swamp areas. Explore the woods on foot, by bike or on horseback, relax at one of the campsites or visit a 'real' play forest.
Liesbos, The Netherlands

Characteristic of the Liesbos are the monumental avenues. They were built in the seventeenth century for the hunting 't Merkske of the noble owners. The hunting procession was able to move quickly and comfortably over it. Today, the forest is largely a nature reserve. Thanks to its wet, nutrient-rich, loamy soil, it has a special flora. In spring, this often results in colourful surprises.
Markdal

The Markdal is located between Breda and the border with Belgium. At the end of the sixties of the last century, the river Mark was canalized. This was done to prevent flooding. Agriculture also benefited greatly. Since 2004, the Mark has been meandering again. And the Markdal is a nature development area with plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling.
Merkske

Literally on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands, a real authentic stream meanders: the Merkske. The stream has its source in Flanders and flows into the Mark about 16 kilometers further. The Merkske has never been canalized, so it still has its original winding course. But what makes the area really special is the stream valley through which the Merkske meanders. Beautiful small-scale landscapes, each with their own flora and fauna, give the valley its own unique look.
Walker with dogStrijbeekse Heide

For a long time, things did not go well for the Strijbeekse Heide. Fens dried up and the soil acidified. As a result, the heathlands grew dense and the original flora and fauna disappeared. The area turned into a dense coniferous forest without much natural diversity. Since 1990, desiccation has been prevented. Fens have been dredged, parts of the area have been ploughed, main roads have been closed and recreational meadows have been removed. Heather plants and birds that have disappeared have returned. The Strijkbeekse Heide is in full development. Enough reason to come and take a look now!
Ulvenhoutse Voorbos

Boswachterij Ulvenhoutse Bos consists of the Sint-Annabos, the Voorbos, the Nieuwbos, the Prinsenbos and the Chaambos. Some parts in the Voorbos and Chaambos are about 1000 years old. This is very special, such old forests are almost non-existent in the Netherlands. You can walk, cycle or go out with a guide in deciduous and coniferous forests with ditches and ditches in which there is agonizing groundwater.
